The Holy Harbingers: Carriers of the Gospel in a Time of Darkness

June 9, 2025

In a world shrouded in darkness and chaos, we are called to be more than just spectators—we are the harbingers, the forerunners of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Our lives are meant to declare, “Though darkness is here, light is coming; though death is present, life is in the room.” As carriers of hope, we must boldly proclaim the works of the Lord, preparing the way for His return with unwavering faith and courage.

Understanding the Role of a Harbinger

A harbinger is someone or something that signals the approach of an event or change. Biblically, harbingers and forerunners are messengers who prepare the way for divine interventions and significant moments in God's plan. Every day, whether in our neighborhoods, workplaces, schools, or communities, we are walking signs of hope—carrying the message of Jesus Christ to those who need it most. Our mission is to reach every ear capable of hearing, to be fearless in venturing into the places others avoid, and to declare the coming King with boldness.

Biblical Foundations: Isaiah’s Prophecy

Isaiah 40:3 proclaims, “A voice of one calling in the wilderness: Prepare the way for the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God.” This prophetic call underscores the importance of preparation—removing obstacles, leveling valleys, and lowering high places—to reveal God's glory. As harbingers, we are called to prepare hearts and environments for His coming, paving the way through our words, actions, and lives.

Lessons from John the Baptist

Among biblical harbingers, John the Baptist stands out as the quintessential example. Even in his mother's womb, John responded to the presence of God; leaping in Elizabeth’s womb when Mary arrived, he understood early on the significance of being in God's presence. When he emerged from the wilderness, covered in locusts and wild attire, his purpose was clear: to prepare the people for Jesus’ ministry.

John's traits as a harbinger offer vital lessons:

  1. Presence-Driven Life
John was attuned to God's presence from conception. As believers, we must cultivate awareness of God's Spirit daily. Responding to His presence grants us discernment—knowing when we're dealing with oppression, spiritual warfare, or divine opportunities. Our response must be immediate and genuine, not perfunctory. We should pursue a lifestyle where the Holy Spirit’s presence guides our words, actions, and attitudes.
  2. Valuing Hiddenness
John’s ministry was rooted in hidden seasons—living in the wilderness, growing in strength and character before publicly declaring Jesus. Similarly, we must honor our hidden seasons of service and preparation. These times of obscurity, often filled with mundane tasks like serving in the nursery, cleaning, or quietly praying, are vital. God sees these secret acts of obedience, and they prepare us for greater influence. Hiddenness builds humility, character, and trustworthiness.
  3. Humility in Ministry
John knew his role was to point to Jesus, not himself. When asked if he was the Messiah, he declared, “He who comes after me is greater than I.” True harbingers maintain humility, understanding their place in God's kingdom. Our focus must remain on Christ, not on gaining followers or recognition. Authentic humility keeps our hearts aligned with God's purpose.
  4. Boldness in Delivering the Word
John did not shy from speaking truth. Confronting the Pharisees and calling out hypocrisy, he boldly declared, “You brood of vipers!” The world needs believers who speak with clarity and courage, not watered-down messages. Boldness, however, must be rooted in love and knowledge of the Word. When we know Jesus and His truth, our words carry divine authority.
  5. Living in Obedience and Integrity
Obedience is paramount. John baptized people with water, but he pointed to Jesus, who baptizes with the Holy Spirit and fire. Our obedience might require sacrifices—public or private. It could mean dying to personal preferences, comforts, or desires. Yet, through obedience, we position ourselves for God's greater purposes, knowing that resurrection follows every death.
  6. Preparedness for Sacrifice and Even Death
John’s martyrdom reminds us that being a harbinger may come with a cost. We might face rejection, persecution, or even death for standing firm in truth. Spiritually, it means dying to ourselves—our ambitions, pride, and worldly attachments. This death paves the way for new life and spiritual revival, both in us and through us.

The Call to Repentance and Purity

Isaiah’s prophecy continues: “Every valley shall be raised up, every mountain made low.” This signifies the need for spiritual humility and honesty. We are called to unearth hidden sins, expose darkness, and humble ourselves before God. Repentance is the foundation of revival—it clears the path for God's glory to be revealed.

The process involves:

  • Recognizing and confessing hidden sins and iniquities.
  • Removing high places—things we exalt above God like fame, money, or status.
  • Leveling valleys—exposing shame, guilt, and unforgiveness.
  • Making straight the pathway—aligning our hearts and lives with God's purposes.

When we do this collectively and individually, God's presence will fill the space, and His glory will be undeniable.

Living a Life of Authentic Obedience

Obedience is more than actions; it's a posture of surrender. Like Jesus on the cross, who endured suffering for the joy set before Him, we are called to stay in position—even when it’s difficult. It requires trusting God's plan, waiting patiently, and remaining faithful, knowing that resurrection comes after every crucifixion.

The Power of the Holy Spirit

Jesus assured His disciples in Matthew 10 that when they face opposition, the Spirit would speak through them. Our boldness must be Spirit-led, not fueled by fleshly pride. As we deepen our knowledge of God's Word, our confidence in sharing the Gospel will grow. Boldness without love and humility can lead to division, but Spirit-led boldness builds up the body of Christ and draws others to salvation.

Honesty in the Church and Personal Walk

Authenticity fuels effective witness. When leaders and believers openly share struggles, doubts, and victories, they create space for others to do the same. Like John the Baptist, who questioned Jesus from prison, we must be honest about our doubts and fears. God is faithful to reassure and strengthen us through His Word and His Spirit.

Obedience in the Face of Challenges

Obedience may lead us into uncomfortable places—public trials, personal sacrifices, or even death. But it also leads to life—resurrection, revival, and eternal rewards. Our willingness to die to ourselves enables the Spirit to work unhindered through us.

The Mission: Preparing Others for the Return of Christ

Our ultimate goal as harbingers is to prepare the world for Jesus’ return. Every act of faithfulness, every sacrifice, and every moment of obedience contributes to this divine preparation. We are building highways in the spirit, unearthing valleys, leveling high places, and making straight paths for the Lord’s glory to be revealed.

A Call for Repentance and Revival

Revival begins with repentance—an honest, humble turning back to God. It requires us to confront our own darkness, unearth hidden sins, and surrender all to Him. Only then can we become vessels through which His glory shines brightly for all to see.

Application Questions

  1. Are there areas in my life that I need to unearth and surrender to God for His glory to be revealed?
  2. Am I living with a Spirit-led boldness, or am I afraid to speak truth out of fear of rejection?
  3. How am I practicing humility in my service and leadership? Do I point others to Jesus or to myself?
  4. What hidden or secret sins do I need to confess and remove to prepare my heart for revival?
  5. In what ways am I dying to my own desires to fully follow Jesus and be a faithful harbinger of His kingdom?

As we reflect on the calling to be holy harbingers, let us remember that God invites us into a process of preparation—unearthing, humbling, and boldly proclaiming His truth. Each of us, regardless of age or background, is equipped to carry the Gospel into every corner of the earth. The question is: Are we willing to respond with fearless obedience and unwavering faith? The world needs the light of Christ, and He is counting on us to be His faithful messengers.

Prepare the way of the Lord; make straight in the wilderness a highway for our God.
