Seek First With Open Hands: 5 Day Devotional

February 2, 2026

Day 1: The Power of Open Hands

Devotional

Have you ever watched a child try to carry too many toys at once? Their little arms strain, items slip and fall, and they become frustrated trying to hold onto everything. Sometimes we approach our relationship with God the same way - clutching tightly to our plans, possessions, and priorities, leaving no room for Him to place something new in our hands.

Open hands represent one of the most powerful spiritual postures we can adopt. When our hands are open, we signal to God that we're available, willing to receive, and ready to let go of whatever He asks us to release. It's a position of trust that says, 'God, I believe You have something better for me than what I'm currently holding onto.'

This isn't about becoming passive or careless with our responsibilities. Rather, it's about holding everything loosely enough that God can redirect our steps without having to pry our fingers open. When we seek God with open hands, we position ourselves to receive His kingdom and righteousness first, trusting that everything else we need will follow.

Think about the last time you received an unexpected gift. Your hands had to be free to accept it. The same principle applies spiritually - God wants to give us good gifts, but we need open hands to receive them.

Bible Verse

'But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.' - Matthew 6:33

Reflection Question

What are you currently holding so tightly that it might be preventing you from receiving what God wants to give you?

Quote

I have learned to hold all things loosely so God will not have to pry them out of my hands.

Prayer

Lord, help me to hold all things loosely so that You won't have to pry them from my hands. Give me the courage to open my hands to You today, trusting that what You have for me is better than what I'm clinging to. Amen.

Day 2: The Seed of Surrender

Devotional

There's something counterintuitive about how God works in our lives. We often think our greatest opportunities come when we pick something up - a new job, hobby, or responsibility. But sometimes the most significant moments happen when we put something down.

Consider how many life-changing stories begin with someone letting go of their original plans. The businessman who left his corporate career to serve in ministry. The athlete who stepped away from competition to focus on family. The artist who set aside their craft only to discover it later became the foundation for reaching others.

Surrender isn't about giving up on our dreams; it's about giving them to God and trusting His timing. When we release our grip on our plans, we create space for God to work in ways we never imagined. That hobby you loved but set aside for a season might become the very tool God uses to reach people you never expected to influence.

The key is recognizing that availability to God often requires unavailability to other things. We can't say yes to everything and still be responsive to God's leading. Sometimes putting something down today plants the seed for something greater tomorrow.

Bible Verse

'Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.' - Matthew 7:7-8

Reflection Question

Is there something in your life that God might be asking you to put down so He can use it differently in the future?

Quote

The seed for that ministry, whether it was in the town or nationally, didn't start when I picked up a skateboard at 50. It started when I put it down at 18.

Prayer

Father, give me wisdom to know when to hold on and when to let go. Help me trust that when I surrender my plans to You, You're not taking something away but preparing something better. Make me available for Your purposes. Amen.

Day 3: Available Hearts, Open Schedules

Devotional

In our achievement-driven culture, busyness has become a badge of honor. We wear our packed schedules like medals, proving our importance and productivity. But what if our busyness is actually preventing us from experiencing God's best for our lives?

When our hands are constantly full and our calendars completely booked, we signal to both God and others that we're unavailable. That divine appointment God wants to arrange? We might miss it because we're rushing to the next commitment. That person who needs encouragement? They might not approach us because we always seem too busy to care.

Availability requires intentional margin - space in our schedules and openness in our hearts. It means saying no to good things so we can say yes to God things. It means building buffer time into our days so we can respond when the Holy Spirit prompts us to pray with someone, help a neighbor, or simply be present in a moment that matters.

Being available doesn't mean being irresponsible with our commitments. It means being strategic about what we commit to in the first place, always leaving room for God to interrupt our plans with His purposes.

Bible Verse

'If anyone among your fellow Israelites becomes poor and is unable to support themselves among you, help them as you would a foreigner and stranger, so they can continue to live among you. Do not take interest or any profit from them, but fear your God, so that they may continue to live among you.' - Deuteronomy 15:7-8

Reflection Question

Are you too busy with the stuff of life to be available to God and the people He places in your path?

Quote

Are you too busy with the stuff of life to be available to God?

Prayer

Lord, help me create margin in my life so I can be available when You call. Show me what I need to release from my schedule so I can be present for the opportunities You bring my way. Let my availability be a gift to others. Amen.

Day 4: Where Does Your Security Rest?

Devotional

We all have security blankets - those things we hold onto tightly because they make us feel safe, valuable, or in control. For some, it's a bank account balance. For others, it's a relationship, career success, or even our reputation. But what happens when God asks us to loosen our grip on these sources of security?

The rich young ruler in Mark's Gospel had everything the world said should make him secure - wealth, status, and religious knowledge. Yet when Jesus invited him to let go of his possessions and follow Him, the man walked away sad. His security was so tied to his wealth that he couldn't imagine life without it, even when Jesus Himself was offering something infinitely better.

True security can only be found in God. Everything else - no matter how stable it seems - can be taken away in an instant. Jobs end, relationships change, health fails, and savings disappear. But God remains constant, faithful, and unchanging.

When we recognize that our ultimate security rests in God alone, we can hold everything else with open hands. We can enjoy our blessings without being enslaved by them. We can work hard without being driven by fear. We can love deeply without being possessive.

Bible Verse

'No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.' - Mark 10:17-22

Reflection Question

Do you know where your security lies, and what might you be holding onto too tightly out of fear?

Quote

Has something become an idol in your life? Could be a job, could be, don't know. It could be money, could be a person, could be a relationship.

Prayer

God, I confess that sometimes I find my security in things other than You. Help me recognize where I've placed my trust in temporary things and give me courage to find my security in You alone. You are my rock and my fortress. Amen.

Day 5: Everything to Receive, Everything to Give

Devotional

Faith presents us with a beautiful paradox. On one hand, God asks nothing of us - His love is unconditional, His grace is free, and His acceptance isn't based on our performance. We come to Him with empty hands, offering nothing but our need, and He gives us everything - forgiveness, purpose, hope, and eternal life.

Yet on the other hand, following Jesus requires everything from us. He calls us to bring our whole selves - our dreams, fears, talents, and weaknesses - and surrender them completely to His lordship. This isn't contradiction; it's the mystery of grace meeting discipleship.

When we truly understand what God has given us, our natural response is to give everything back to Him. Not out of obligation, but out of overwhelming gratitude and love. We realize that holding anything back from the One who gave us everything would be both foolish and ungrateful.

This total surrender isn't a one-time event but a daily choice. Each morning we wake up and decide again to live with open hands - ready to receive God's grace and ready to give our all in response. It's in this posture of complete availability that we discover the abundant life Jesus promised.

Bible Verse

'Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it. What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?' - Mark 8:34-37

Reflection Question

Are you ready to come to God with open hands - having nothing to offer but everything to receive, and willing to give your whole self in response to His love?

Quote

Faith is like an empty open hand stretched out toward God with nothing to offer and everything to receive.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, I come to You with empty hands and an open heart. I have nothing to offer but my need, yet You give me everything. In response to Your incredible love, I offer You my whole life. Help me live each day with hands open to receive Your grace and ready to give my all for Your kingdom. Amen.
