5 Day Devotional: The Great Commission

April 13, 2026

Day 1: The Authority Behind the Mission

Devotional

When Jesus gave the Great Commission, He didn't speak as a teacher offering suggestions or a leader making requests. He spoke with the full weight of resurrection authority. His words carry the power of One who conquered death itself and now holds dominion over everything in heaven and earth. This isn't borrowed power or temporary influence - it's absolute, eternal authority earned through perfect obedience and victorious resurrection. Understanding this changes everything about how we approach sharing our faith. We're not sharing personal opinions or religious preferences; we're carrying the message of the King who has ultimate authority over all creation. His power backs every conversation, every prayer, every act of service we offer in His name. When we feel intimidated or uncertain about speaking for Jesus, we must remember whose authority we carry.

Bible Verse

'You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being.' - Revelation 4:11

Reflection Question

How does knowing that Jesus has complete authority over everything change the way you approach sharing your faith with others?

Quote

He doesn't say I've been given some authority. He doesn't say I've been given borrowed authority. He doesn't say I've been given temporary authority. He has resurrection, power and authority.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, help me to remember that Your authority backs every step I take in obedience to You. Give me confidence to speak and act knowing that all power in heaven and earth belongs to You.

Day 2: Called Despite Our Doubts

Devotional

The disciples' response to seeing the risen Jesus reveals something profound about faith - they both worshipped and doubted simultaneously. This wasn't a failure of faith; it was honest humanity encountering the divine. Many of us disqualify ourselves from God's mission because we don't feel ready, qualified, or certain enough. We think our doubts, fears, or imperfections make us unsuitable for sharing the gospel. But Jesus includes us anyway. He doesn't wait for us to have perfect faith or complete understanding. The Great Commission isn't reserved for spiritual giants or seminary graduates - it's for every believer, including those wrestling with questions and uncertainties. Your doubts don't disqualify you from God's mission; they make you relatable to others who are also searching for truth. When we worship in the midst of our uncertainties, we demonstrate authentic faith that others can connect with.

Bible Verse

'Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."' - Matthew 28:18-20

Reflection Question

What doubts or feelings of inadequacy have been holding you back from fully embracing your role in God's mission?

Quote

Jesus still wants to use you. Your doubts don't preclude you. Jesus still includes you in his mission.

Prayer

Father, thank You that You use imperfect people like me. Help me to worship You even in my moments of doubt and to trust that You can work through my weaknesses.

Day 3: Mission in the Mundane

Devotional

The Great Commission doesn't require a passport or a pulpit - it happens in the grocery store, at the school pickup line, in your workplace, and across your backyard fence. Jesus calls us to make disciples "as we go," meaning discipleship flows naturally from our daily routines and relationships. This transforms ordinary moments into kingdom opportunities. Your neighbor struggling with anxiety, your coworker facing a difficult decision, the parent you chat with at your child's soccer game - these are your mission field. Disciple-making isn't reserved for special church events or overseas trips; it belongs in the normal rhythm of Christian life. When we shift our perspective to see every interaction as a potential kingdom moment, we discover that God has strategically placed us exactly where we are for His purposes. The person sitting next to you at lunch might be one conversation away from encountering Jesus through your authentic witness.

Bible Verse

'He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all nations and peoples of every language worshiped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed.' - Daniel 7:14

Reflection Question

Who in your daily routine - at work, in your neighborhood, or in your regular activities - might God be calling you to intentionally invest in spiritually?

Quote

As you go to work, as you live on your street, as you speak with your neighbors, as you meet people in ordinary moments, make disciples.

Prayer

Lord, open my eyes to see the mission opportunities in my everyday life. Help me to be intentional about building relationships that can lead others to You.

Day 4: Ambassadors with Authority

Devotional

When you speak for Jesus, you're not sharing personal opinions or offering religious suggestions - you're serving as an official representative of the King of kings. An ambassador doesn't speak on their own authority; they carry the full backing of the government they represent. Similarly, when we share the gospel, pray for someone, or serve in Jesus' name, we operate under His delegated authority. This means we don't need to wonder if we have the right to pray for healing, share the good news, or invite someone to church. Jesus has already authorized us to go. We're not volunteers with opinions; we're commissioned representatives of Christ. This understanding should fill us with holy confidence, not arrogance, but the quiet assurance that comes from knowing we're backed by heaven's authority. When we approach others with this perspective, we speak with the confidence of those who know their message carries divine weight and their prayers have heavenly backing.

Bible Verse

'Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name' - Philippians 2:9

Reflection Question

How would your conversations about faith change if you truly believed you were speaking as an authorized ambassador of Christ rather than just sharing personal beliefs?

Quote

When you speak for Jesus, you're not a volunteer with an opinion. You're an ambassador with delegated authority.

Prayer

Jesus, help me to understand the weight and privilege of representing You to others. Give me the confidence that comes from knowing I carry Your authority.

Day 5: Breaking Out for Breakthrough

Devotional

God is preparing to move powerfully in our communities, but the question isn't whether the Holy Spirit will show up - it's whether the church will break out of comfort zones to participate. Revival isn't hindered by God's reluctance to work; it's limited by our willingness to step out in faith. The wave of God's Spirit is coming, but we must be ready to ride it rather than watch from the shore. This means identifying specific people in our lives who need Jesus and intentionally engaging them with the gospel. It means opening our homes for discipleship, being willing to have difficult conversations, and stepping beyond the familiar walls of church buildings into the messy reality of people's lives. The anointing of God breaks every yoke, but we must be willing to move beyond our flesh - our fears, insecurities, and preferences - to see His power released. Who in your world needs to hear about Jesus this week? Name them. Visualize them. Then go.

Bible Verse

'Lord, I have heard of your fame; I stand in awe of your deeds, Lord. Repeat them in our day, in our time make them known; in wrath remember mercy.' - Habakkuk 3:2

Reflection Question

Who is one specific person in your life that you will commit to sharing the gospel with this week, and what's your plan to engage them?

Quote

The problem is never the spirit breaking out. The problem is the church breaking out.

Prayer

Holy Spirit, prepare my heart and the hearts of those around me for Your move. Give me courage to break out of my comfort zone and boldly share Your love.
