5 Day Devotional: Seek First The Great Reward.

February 9, 2026

Day 1: Finding Your Shield in the Storm

Devotional

Life has a way of leaving us feeling exposed and vulnerable. Maybe you're facing uncertainty at work, struggling with health concerns, or watching your carefully laid plans crumble. Abraham knew this feeling intimately. At 74 years old, with a barren wife and surrounded by enemies, he found himself in a frightening place of vulnerability. Yet in this moment of fear, God spoke words that would echo through eternity: 'Do not be afraid, Abraham. I am your shield. Your exceedingly great reward.' Notice that God didn't promise Abraham a shield—He declared that He IS the shield. When life feels overwhelming and you're searching for security, remember that your protection doesn't come from your bank account, your job security, or even your health. Your ultimate security rests in the unchanging character of God Himself. He stands between you and whatever threatens to overwhelm you. In a world that constantly shifts and changes, you have a shield that never fails, never weakens, and never abandons His post. Today, whatever storm you're facing, you can find peace knowing that the Creator of the universe has positioned Himself as your personal protector.

Bible Verse

'After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision, saying, "Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your exceedingly great reward."' - Genesis 15:1

Reflection Question

What areas of your life are you trying to shield yourself, and how might trusting God as your shield change your approach to these concerns?

Quote

After these things, the word of the Lord came to Abraham in a vision, saying, do not be afraid, Abraham. I am your shield. Your exceedingly great rewards.

Prayer

Lord, when fear tries to overwhelm me, help me remember that You are my shield. I don't have to face life's storms alone because You stand guard over my heart and my future. Give me the courage to trust in Your protection rather than my own efforts to stay safe. Amen.

Day 2: The In-Between Place

Devotional

There's a space that every believer knows well—the in-between. It's that uncomfortable place where you've received God's promise but haven't yet seen its fulfillment. Abraham lived in this space for years, holding onto God's promise of descendants while his wife remained barren. The in-between can feel like a scary place because it strips away our illusion of control and forces us to become completely dependent on God. Maybe you're in your own in-between right now. You've prayed for healing, but the symptoms persist. You've trusted God with your finances, but the bills keep coming. You've believed for restoration in a relationship, but nothing seems to change. The in-between isn't a punishment—it's a sacred space where faith is refined and dependence on God deepens. It's where we learn that God's timing isn't our timing, but His timing is always perfect. Abraham's story reminds us that the in-between isn't empty waiting; it's active trusting. Every day in this space is an opportunity to choose faith over fear, to believe God's character over our circumstances. The in-between is where we discover that God Himself is enough, even when nothing else makes sense.

Bible Verse

'But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.' - Matthew 6:33

Reflection Question

What promises from God are you waiting to see fulfilled, and how can you actively trust Him while you wait?

Quote

Abraham finds himself in what I can only describe as the in between. He finds himself in between the promise that God has made made and the fulfillment of that promise.

Prayer

Father, the in-between feels uncomfortable and uncertain, but I choose to trust You in this space. Help me see this time not as empty waiting, but as an opportunity to grow closer to You. Strengthen my faith as I depend on You completely. Amen.

Day 3: When God Reorders Your Desires

Devotional

Have you ever noticed how getting something you desperately wanted sometimes leaves you feeling empty? That promotion, that relationship, that purchase—they promised fulfillment but delivered disappointment. This happens because we're seeking satisfaction in things that were never designed to satisfy our deepest longings. When God becomes our great reward, something beautiful happens: He reorders our desires. The things that once consumed our thoughts and drove our decisions begin to lose their grip on us. This doesn't mean we become indifferent to life or stop caring about important things. Instead, we find that when God is at the center, everything else finds its proper place. That career becomes a way to serve rather than a source of identity. Relationships become opportunities to love rather than sources of validation. Possessions become tools for generosity rather than trophies of success. When your heart finds its home in God, you discover a contentment that circumstances can't shake. The external pressures that once felt overwhelming become manageable because your worth isn't tied to outcomes. You can pursue excellence without being enslaved by perfectionism. You can enjoy blessings without being defined by them. This is the freedom that comes when God reorders your desires according to His perfect design.

Bible Verse

'Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.' - Psalm 37:4

Reflection Question

What desires in your life might need reordering, and how would your priorities change if God truly became your greatest treasure?

Quote

The great reward reorders our desires.

Prayer

Lord, I confess that I sometimes seek satisfaction in things that can't truly fulfill me. Reorder my desires so that You become my greatest treasure. Help me find my contentment in You alone, and let everything else flow from that relationship. Amen.

Day 4: Overflow, Not Foundation

Devotional

There's a crucial difference between building your faith on God's blessings and allowing blessings to overflow from your faith in God. When blessings become the foundation, your faith becomes fragile—dependent on circumstances staying favorable. But when God Himself is your foundation, blessings become the beautiful overflow of a relationship rooted in His unchanging character. God isn't anti-blessing. He's actually the ultimate reward giver who delights in giving good gifts to His children. But He's also wise enough to know that when we make His gifts more important than His presence, we've missed the point entirely. Think about it this way: a healthy tree produces fruit naturally, but the fruit isn't what makes the tree healthy. The tree's health comes from its roots, its connection to good soil, and proper nourishment. Similarly, when your spiritual roots are deep in God's love and character, blessings flow naturally—not as the goal, but as the overflow. This perspective transforms how you handle both abundance and scarcity. In seasons of plenty, you're grateful but not prideful. In seasons of lack, you're concerned but not devastated. Your faith remains steady because it's built on the Rock that never shifts, never fails, and never changes. When God becomes your reward, everything else moves from being the goal to being the overflow.

Bible Verse

'Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.' - Matthew 7:7-8

Reflection Question

Are there areas where you've been building your faith on God's blessings rather than on God Himself, and how can you shift your foundation?

Quote

Blessing, however, is never the foundation of our faith. It's what overflows because of it.

Prayer

God, help me build my faith on You alone, not on what You give me. Let Your blessings be the overflow of our relationship, not the foundation of my trust. Keep my heart focused on You as my ultimate reward. Amen.

Day 5: Eternal Rewards That Last

Devotional

What if the most valuable rewards in life aren't the ones you can hold in your hands? Abraham discovered this truth in a profound way. By trusting God completely, he didn't lose anything—he gained everything God had intended for him. But the rewards weren't just for Abraham; they continue to impact lives thousands of years later. Eternal rewards aren't just about what we'll receive in heaven someday, though that's certainly part of it. They're about what God does through our faithfulness that continues long after we're gone. These rewards are often seen in people, not possessions. The coworker who comes to faith because of your consistent witness. The child who learns to trust God because of your example. The friend who finds hope in their darkest moment because you chose to love them well. These investments in eternity compound in ways we may never fully understand this side of heaven. Every act of obedience, every choice to trust God over circumstances, every moment you choose His way over the world's way—these create ripples that extend far beyond your lifetime. One day, you'll stand face to face with Jesus and hear the words, 'Well done, good and faithful servant.' But even before that day, you can experience the deep satisfaction that comes from knowing your life is making an eternal difference. When God Himself becomes your reward, everything else points to something eternal.

Bible Verse

'And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.' - Hebrews 11:6

Reflection Question

What eternal investments are you making with your life, and how might God be using your faithfulness to impact others in ways you haven't yet seen?

Quote

Eternal rewards are often seen in people, not possessions. Lives change, seeds planted that continue to grow long after we're gone.

Prayer

Father, help me live with eternity in mind. Show me how to invest my time, energy, and resources in things that will last forever. May my faithfulness today create ripples of blessing that continue long after I'm gone. Amen.
