Seek First: The King and The Kingdom

5 Day Devotional

Day 1: A King Like No Other

Devotional

Long before Jesus was born, the prophet Isaiah spoke of a coming King whose reign would never end. Seven hundred years later, that promise walked into history in the person of Jesus Christ. When He began His ministry, His message cut straight to the heart: the Kingdom of God is near. This is not a kingdom built on power, politics, or military might. It is built on truth, love, grace, forgiveness, and serving others. It is, in many ways, an upside-down kingdom. The greatest are those who serve. The strong lay down their lives for the weak. The King Himself came not to be served, but to give His life away. Maybe you have been looking for something solid to hold onto. Something that will not shift with the news cycle or crumble under pressure. Here is the good news: there is a King whose rule is unshakeable, and He is inviting you into His kingdom today. You do not have to have it all together to belong. You just have to turn toward Him.

Bible Verse

"For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. The government will rest on his shoulders. And he will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace." - Isaiah 9:6

Reflection Question

If Jesus truly is a King unlike any ruler the world has ever seen, what would it look like for you to actually treat Him as King in your everyday life?

Quote

"The kingdom of God is an upside down kingdom. It's built on truth, it's built on love, it's built on grace, it's built on forgiveness, and it's built on serving others."

Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You for being a King worth trusting. Help me to see You clearly today and to live as someone who belongs to Your kingdom. Amen.

Day 2: The Kingdom Is Already Here

Devotional

We often think of God's kingdom as something far off, something we will experience only after we die. But Jesus had a different message. He said the Kingdom of God is already among us. Right here. Right now. Every time someone bound by addiction finds freedom, the Kingdom is breaking in. Every time a person discovers they are loved by God, the Kingdom is breaking in. Every time someone chooses to forgive an enemy instead of holding a grudge, the Kingdom is breaking in. These are not small moments. They are signs that God is actively at work in the world. This means your life is not just a waiting room until heaven. It is a place where the Kingdom of God can show up today. In your home, your workplace, your neighborhood, and your relationships, God wants to move. You are not a bystander in this story. You are invited to be part of what God is doing right now. Every choice you make to reflect the character of Jesus is a moment where heaven touches earth.

Bible Verse

"The time promised by God has come at last! The Kingdom of God is near! Repent of your sins and believe the Good News!" - Mark 1:15

Reflection Question

Where in your daily life do you most need to open your eyes to the ways God's kingdom might already be breaking in around you?

Quote

"The kingdom of God can't be detected by visible signs. You won't be able to say, here it is, or it's over there, for the kingdom of God is already among you."

Prayer

Father, open my eyes to see where Your kingdom is already at work in my life and in the lives of those around me. Give me the courage to be part of it. Amen.

Day 3: Compassion Over Judgment

Devotional

One of the clearest signs that the Kingdom of God is present is the way people are treated. Jesus consistently moved toward those who were hurting, overlooked, and written off by others. He did not lead with judgment. He led with compassion. This is one of the most countercultural things about following Jesus. Our instinct, when we encounter someone struggling, is often to assess, evaluate, or keep our distance. But the Kingdom of God calls us to something different. It calls us to show up, to sit with people in their pain, and to reflect the love of a King who came not to condemn but to restore. Think about the people in your life right now. Is there someone you have been quicker to judge than to love? A coworker, a family member, a neighbor? The Kingdom of God breaks in when we choose compassion over criticism. This is not always easy. But it is always worth it. And it is always what Jesus would do.

Bible Verse

"Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and He will give you everything you need." - Matthew 6:33

Reflection Question

Is there someone in your life right now who needs your compassion more than your judgment, and what is one practical step you could take toward them this week?

Quote

"When Jesus is king, when we encounter people who are struggling, we use compassion. We choose compassion rather than judgment. That is the kingdom of God."

Prayer

Jesus, soften my heart toward the people around me who are hurting. Help me to choose compassion the way You always did, and to reflect Your kingdom in how I treat others. Amen.

Day 4: A Hope That Holds

Devotional

We live in a world that is not yet fully restored. Suffering is real. Injustice is real. Loss is real. And if we are honest, there are moments when it is hard to hold onto hope. But here is what the Kingdom of God offers that nothing else can: a hope that is steadfast and certain. Not wishful thinking. Not a vague optimism. A promise backed by the character of a King who has never broken His word. One day, Jesus will return. Every wrong will be made right. Death itself will be destroyed. God will wipe away every tear, and His reign of peace and justice will be fully and finally revealed. That is not a fairy tale. That is the promise of Scripture. And that future promise changes how we live today. It means we do not have to be crushed by what is broken around us, because we know how the story ends. We can face hard days with courage, serve others with generosity, and keep going when things are difficult, because our hope is anchored in a King who is coming back.

Bible Verse

"I heard a loud shout from the throne, saying, 'Look, God's home is now among His people! He will live with them, and they will be his people. God Himself will be with them. He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever.'" - Revelation 21:3-4

Reflection Question

How would living with a genuine, daily awareness of God's future promise change the way you approach the hardest parts of your life right now?

Quote

"The kingdom of God is a future promise. What does that mean for us today, though? It means that I can live with hope."

Prayer

Lord, when the weight of this world feels heavy, remind me of the hope I have in You. Anchor my heart in Your promises and help me to live today in light of what You have promised for tomorrow. Amen.

Day 5: Keep Choosing Jesus

Devotional

Following Jesus is not a one-time decision. It is a daily one. Every morning we wake up and face a choice: will we seek His kingdom first, or will we let everything else crowd Him out? When we surrender our lives to Jesus, He becomes more than a name we believe in or a Savior we call on in a crisis. He becomes our King. And living under His kingship means letting His values shape our values, letting His priorities become our priorities, and letting His love flow through us to the people around us. This is not about being perfect. It is about direction. Repentance simply means turning away from our old way of living and turning toward God, choosing His way instead of our own. Every day is a new opportunity to make that turn. The Kingdom of God will always look like King Jesus. So if you want to know what the Kingdom looks like in your home, your workplace, and your relationships, look at the King. Then keep choosing Him, one day at a time. You are not alone in this. He is with you.

Bible Verse

"'You are a king then?' Pilate asked. Jesus responded, 'You say I am a king. Actually, I was born and came into the world to testify to the truth. All who love the truth recognize that what I say is true.'" - John 18:37

Reflection Question

What is one area of your life where you have been living by your own way rather than the King's way, and what would it look like to surrender that to Jesus today?

Quote

"If we truly want to see the kingdom of God breaking into our everyday lives, our families, our homes, our workplaces, our relationships, right here and right now, we need to keep choosing Jesus."

Prayer

Jesus, I choose You again today. Help me to seek Your kingdom first in every decision I make, and let my life reflect the character of my King. Amen.
