It's Time Multiply

There are moments in the life of a church when God calls His people to lift their eyes beyond what is comfortable and begin preparing for something greater. This is one of those moments. Across healthy churches, there is a growing sense that the Holy Spirit is speaking a simple but significant word:

"It's time to multiply."

Many churches naturally think in terms of addition—one new person here, another family there. Every life matters, and every salvation is worth celebrating. Yet Scripture reveals that God's intention has always been far bigger than simple addition. His heart is multiplication.

God's Heart Has Always Been Multiplication

From the very beginning of Scripture, multiplication is woven into God's purposes. When God created humanity, His first blessing was:

"Be fruitful and multiply." (Genesis 1:28)

After the flood, God's first instruction to Noah was exactly the same:

"Be fruitful and multiply." (Genesis 9:1)

When God called Abraham, He didn't simply promise him a family. He promised that his descendants would multiply exceedingly and become a blessing to the nations (Genesis 17:2,6). This isn't merely about biological growth. It reveals something of God's character. God is a God who brings life, increase and expansion. Healthy things multiply. We expect healthy families to grow. Healthy plants produce fruit. Healthy organisms reproduce. Why should the Church expect anything different?

Multiplication in the New Covenant

The Great Commission takes this same principle and applies it spiritually. Jesus commanded His followers:

"Go and make disciples of all nations..." (Matthew 28:19)

Every time someone places their faith in Christ, spiritual life begins. Someone who was spiritually dead is made alive. A new child is welcomed into God's family. This is why evangelism matters so deeply. We are not simply persuading people to attend church—we are inviting people into eternal life through Jesus Christ.

Addition Isn't the Goal

The early church certainly experienced addition. Acts 2 tells us that three thousand people were added in a single day. But even there, addition quickly became multiplication. The gospel spread from Jerusalem into Judea, Samaria and eventually throughout the Roman Empire because ordinary believers carried the message wherever they went. The church multiplied because the people were mobilised. That's still God's strategy today.

From Stage-Centred to People-Centred

For too long, many churches have unintentionally adopted a model where evangelism happens mainly from the platform. The assumption becomes that the pastor, guest speaker or evangelist is responsible for reaching the lost, while everyone else simply invites people to church. Invitation is valuable, but invitation alone will never fulfil the Great Commission. According to Ephesians 4, church leaders exist to equip God's people for works of ministry—not to do all the ministry themselves. When every believer understands that they are called to share Jesus in everyday life, the reach of the church expands dramatically. Every workplace becomes a mission field. Every school. Every neighbourhood. Every sports club. Every coffee shop. Every family gathering. Instead of expecting people to come to church before they hear the gospel, the Church takes the gospel to where people already are. That is how multiplication happens.

Your World Is Your Mission Field

When Jesus said, "Go into all the world," He wasn't speaking only to missionaries travelling overseas. Every believer already has a world. Your family. Your friends. Your colleagues. Your neighbours. Your gym. Your school. Your university. These are the people God has already placed around you. Often, the greatest mission field isn't across the world—it's across the street. God is inviting every Christian to stop seeing evangelism as someone else's responsibility and begin embracing it as part of everyday discipleship.

Two Questions Every Christian Must Answer

If we are serious about multiplication, two questions deserve honest reflection.

1. Do we believe?

Do we truly believe that Jesus is the only way of salvation? Do we believe that people need the gospel? Do we believe that eternity is real? If we genuinely believe these truths, then silence becomes difficult to justify.

2. Do we care?

Love always moves us to action. If we care about the people around us, we cannot remain silent forever. We don't need all the answers. We don't need perfect theological training. We simply need the willingness to tell others what Jesus has done for us. God uses ordinary people with ordinary stories to accomplish extraordinary things.

Here I Am. Send Me.

Isaiah heard God ask,

"Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?" (Isaiah 6:8)

His response has echoed through history:

"Here am I. Send me."

That remains the invitation today. God isn't looking for perfect people. He's looking for available people. When ordinary believers say yes, God opens doors, creates opportunities and empowers His people by the Holy Spirit. Healthy churches don't simply grow because of good programmes. They multiply because ordinary Christians embrace their calling to live as everyday witnesses. May we refuse to settle for addition when God is calling us into multiplication. May we become a church where every believer is equipped, every disciple is engaged, and every member sees their everyday world as a mission field. The harvest is plentiful. Now is the time to multiply.

4. How can our church move from relying primarily on platform ministry to mobilising every believer for evangelism?
5. If God is calling our church to multiply rather than merely add, what practical changes might we need to embrace?
