Seek First at Home

A 5-Day Devotional

Based on the sermon series: Matthew 6:33 | 2 Timothy 1:6-7

"Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need." — Matthew 6:33

Day 1 — Monday

Like a Child

Scripture "Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven." — Matthew 18:3

Reflection

Monday has a habit of arriving loudly. The weekend's peace fades fast, and by 8am it can feel like Sunday never happened. But Jesus, when asked who would be greatest in the kingdom of heaven, didn't point to the most experienced or the most put-together. He pointed to a child.

Children have tantrums — but they move on. They don't carry yesterday's worries into today. They look at a broken world and believe they can fix it. They trust completely.

That is the posture Jesus is inviting you into this week. Not naivety, not ignoring the hard things — but a deep, settled trust that God has it in hand. Total dependence. Open hands.

The grace of God is sufficient for you today — even if this Monday is already unravelling.

Reflect When did you last feel genuinely childlike in your faith — unburdened, trusting, expectant? What has made that harder to hold onto?

Pray Lord, I confess that life has a way of making me feel like it all depends on me. Today I want to come to you with open hands. Help me to trust you the way a child trusts — completely, without holding back. Where I've been carrying things that belong to you, I lay them down now. Your grace is enough for today. Amen.

Day 2 — Tuesday

The Battle Is Not Yours

Scripture "Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God's." — 2 Chronicles 20:15

Reflection

Jehoshaphat was surrounded. An enormous army was closing in, and by every human measure, the situation was hopeless. But the people prayed, fasted, and listened — and God's word to them was extraordinary: the battle is not yours, but mine.

So they walked toward the battlefield worshipping. And by the time they arrived, the enemy had already destroyed itself.

We are living in anxious times. A 2024 study found that 1 in 5 adults in the UK are diagnosed with an anxiety disorder — and for young people aged 16 to 24, it's 1 in 4. The pressures are real. The fears are real. God doesn't dismiss any of that.

But He does say: this battle is mine.

The same God who went before Jehoshaphat goes before you. Whatever feels overwhelming today — the situation at work, the relationship that keeps breaking down, the worry about your children, the fear about the future — you are not facing it alone, and you are not the one who has to win it.

Your job today is to worship on the way to the battlefield.

Reflect What battle are you currently trying to fight in your own strength? What would it look like to hand it over to God today — practically, not just in theory?

Pray Father, I bring you the things I've been carrying that are too heavy for me. I name them now before you: [take a moment to name what's weighing on you]. You are my refuge and my strength. The battle belongs to you. I choose today to walk forward in worship rather than in fear. Go before me. Amen.

Day 3 — Wednesday

Power You Already Carry

Scripture "For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind." — 2 Timothy 1:7

Reflection

Timothy was young. He was surrounded by people who doubted whether he had what it took. And yet Paul wrote to him with absolute certainty: God has already placed something extraordinary inside you. Don't be timid with it. Fan it into flame.

The same is true for you.

The power Paul is talking about isn't something you need to earn or work up to. It's already there — given to you by the Holy Spirit. The same power that raised Jesus from the dead lives in you. The gifts of the Spirit — faith, prophecy, healing, encouragement, wisdom, tongues — are available to every believer, regardless of age or experience.

The problem isn't that we don't have the power. It's that we're afraid to use it. We hesitate to pray for someone's healing. We hold back from sharing what we feel God is saying. We carry the gift around without unwrapping it.

What would it look like today to use what God has already placed inside you — even in one small, ordinary moment?

Reflect Is there a gift, a prompting, or an act of faith you've been holding back on? What would it take to take one small step toward using it today?

Pray Holy Spirit, I ask you to fill me afresh today. I don't want to carry your power without using it. Show me where you want me to step out in faith — in a conversation, in a prayer, in an act of courage. I choose not to shrink back. Fan into flame whatever gift you've placed inside me. Amen.

Day 4 — Thursday

Love Is a Weapon

Scripture "There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear." — 1 John 4:18

Reflection

Here is something the world rarely tells you: love is one of the most powerful weapons against fear.

Not love as a feeling — but love as a choice. Love as action. Love as something visible and offered, even when it costs you something.

When we choose to turn our attention outward — to genuinely care for others, to serve, to encourage, to show up — something shifts inside us. Fear is self-focused. It pulls us inward, convinces us that everything is about our safety, our comfort, our survival. Love breaks that cycle entirely.

The world tells us constantly that it's all about how we feel. But Jesus taught the opposite. He showed us that joy and love and praise — even when we don't feel like it — are the very things that change the atmosphere around us and within us. Lamentations reminds us that his mercies are new every morning. Every day is a fresh start to build new patterns of praise rather than patterns of fear.

Joy wins. It always has.

Reflect Is there someone in your life right now who needs you to choose love toward them — even when it's inconvenient or difficult? How might that act of love also be an act of faith for you?

Pray Lord, I want to love the way you love — outwardly, generously, without keeping score. Show me someone today who needs kindness, encouragement, or prayer. Help me to be your hands and voice toward them. And as I give, let fear lose its grip on me. Your perfect love is casting it out. Amen.

Day 5 — Friday

Seek First — Starting Here

Scripture "Be on guard. Stand firm in the faith. Be courageous. Be strong. And do everything with love." — 1 Corinthians 16:13-14

Reflection

You've made it to the end of the week. And here's the question that matters most as you head into the weekend and back into Sunday: what did seeking God first look like in your home this week?

Not perfectly. Not impressively. Just — did it happen?

Because this is where it all begins. The worship music in the background. The prayer before school. The moment where, instead of trying to fix something alone, you said: let's give this to God. These small, quiet, unremarkable acts of faith are discipleship. And over time, they build something unshakeable.

We cannot protect the people we love from everything this world throws at them. But we can equip them. We can speak truth instead of fear. We can model what it looks like to trust God when things are hard. We can take authority in prayer and teach others to do the same.

The presence of anxiety may be unavoidable — but the prison of anxiety is optional. And the key to that prison is this: seek first. Every day. In the ordinarymoments. In your home.

Reflect Looking back over this week, where did you see God show up? And looking ahead — what is one habit, however small, that you want to build into your home in the coming weeks?

Pray Father, thank you for this week. For every moment of grace, every fresh start, every time your mercies met me in the morning. I want to build my life — and my home — on seeking you first. Give me courage to speak truth, to walk in love, to use the power you've placed in me. I don't want to face this world without you. Go before me into next week, and let everything I do be rooted in you. Amen.
