Plug in to Power: Discovering the Six-Pack of Holy Spirit Power

May 25, 2026

Today marks a special celebration - Pentecost Sunday, the day we remember when the Holy Spirit came upon the disciples in power. This is the day the global church was born, when ordinary, frightened people were suddenly transformed into bold, alive, unstoppable people.

What Does It Mean to Have Power?

Have you ever experienced the frustration of trying to use a device that won't work, only to discover it wasn't plugged in? Sometimes our Christian walk feels difficult because we haven't "plugged in" to God's power. We struggle along when we were never meant to do this alone.

Jesus promised in Acts 1:8: "'But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.'" The same Holy Spirit that was in that upper room 2,000 years ago is here today - He hasn't retired or gone quiet.

The Six-Pack of Power: What the Holy Spirit Gives Us

1. Power to Witness

Witnessing doesn't come naturally to most of us. We get tongue-tied, lose confidence, and struggle to find the right words. But Jesus specifically promised power to be His witnesses - starting where we are and extending outward.

Notice how Jesus used geographical locations: Jerusalem (where they were), Judea (about 30 miles out), Samaria (about two hours away), and to the ends of the earth. This shows we're called to witness in our immediate area, our wider region, and beyond.

In today's mobile world, we have unprecedented opportunities to influence people not just in our towns but across wider spheres. God can bring the ends of the earth to you through neighbors from different nations, or He might call you to go further afield.

2. Power to Step Forward

After the Holy Spirit came, Peter - the same Peter who had denied Jesus three times - stepped forward and boldly addressed the crowd. This shows us that God can transform even the most unlikely people into bold witnesses.

You might think you don't have the right personality for stepping forward, especially if you're naturally introverted. But God can use anyone when they operate in the power of the Holy Spirit. It's not about your natural abilities - it's about His power working through you.

3. Power to Prophesy

Acts 2:17 tells us: "'In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.'"

The Holy Spirit is for everyone - young and old, new Christians and those who've walked with God for decades. Young people can receive visions from God, and older believers can still dream dreams. It's never too late to be used by God.

Prophecy doesn't have to be super-spiritual. It's simply speaking out something good that God wants to bring about. We can all prophesy positive things over our families, friends, churches, and even our nation. When did you last speak out good things over the people and places in your life?

4. Power for the Miraculous

When the early church grew rapidly, they needed people to handle practical matters like food distribution. The apostles chose people "full of the Spirit and wisdom" for these roles. Stephen, chosen to "wait on tables," ended up performing amazing miracles and signs.

There's no hierarchy in service. You don't have to be on a stage to see miracles happen. Whether you're serving tea and coffee, welcoming people, or working with children, you can see God move powerfully in your role. Every responsibility in church is God-appointed and God-anointed.

5. Power to Be Obedient

Sometimes God gives us direction with very little detail. An angel told Philip to "go south down the desert road that runs from Jerusalem to Gaza" - not much information to go on! But when Philip obeyed, God revealed the next step.

God is often "high on obedience and low on detail." On the back of our obedience, there are people waiting to have the gospel explained to them. They're in the "valley of decision," waiting for someone to show them the way.

Can you be open to the nudges of the Holy Spirit? Sometimes those annoying moments when you have to go back somewhere or take an unexpected detour are divine appointments with people God wants you to meet.

6. Power to Be Godly

Living a godly life in an ungodly world isn't easy. Paul warned Timothy about people in the last days who would have "a form of godliness but denying its power."

How many of us have been Christians for years but are living mediocre Christian lives? We look godly on the outside but aren't really fulfilling what God wants us to do because we're denying the power of the Holy Spirit.

Why We Lose Power

Just like electrical devices, we can lose our spiritual power in several ways:

  • We're broken and need some attention to be "fixed" so we can be plugged in again
  • We overload by trying to do too much in our own strength instead of relying on the Holy Spirit
  • Life's storms have weathered us and we've lost our connection
  • We're fearful of what being filled with the Holy Spirit might mean

Ministry Should Be Fun and Fulfilling

You were never meant to struggle in your Christian walk. Ministry and serving God should be enjoyable and fulfilling. If it feels difficult, you might be doing it in your own strength rather than in the power of the Holy Spirit.

Life Application

This week, identify which area of the "six-pack of power" you most need in your life right now. Are you struggling to witness? Do you need boldness to step forward? Have you stopped prophesying good things over your family and circumstances?

Ask the Holy Spirit to fill you afresh with power in that specific area. Remember, the same Spirit that transformed frightened disciples into world-changers is available to you today.

Questions for Reflection:

  • In which of the six areas do you most need the Holy Spirit's power right now?
  • What has been holding you back from fully embracing the power of the Holy Spirit in your life?
  • How might your family, workplace, or community be different if you operated in the full power of the Holy Spirit?
  • What step of obedience is God asking you to take, even if you don't have all the details?

The Holy Spirit hasn't retired - He's here, ready to empower you for the life and ministry God has called you to. Don't settle for a powerless Christian life when God has so much more available to you.
